Unlike Baldwin, Leah Vukmir Pledges To Meet With Every Supreme Court Nominee And Thoroughly Review Their Qualifications
Brookfield, Wis. — With Sen. Tammy Baldwin refusing to meet with Judge Kavanaugh and saying in July that she would oppose his nomination, U.S. Senate candidate Leah Vukmir released the following statement Tuesday:
“Sen. Baldwin tells you she’s in your corner, but she refused to perform a basic function of her job and meet with Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh,” Leah Vukmir said. “We can disagree with one another, but the Wisconsin way is to meet and listen to each other. As senator, I promise to meet with every Supreme Court nominee because it’s not possible to fight for Wisconsin values if you refuse to speak with the judges who interpret our laws.”
Less than 48 hours after President Trump nominated Brett Kavanaugh, Tammy Baldwin said she would oppose his nomination. “The battle over U.S. Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh took center stage in Wisconsin’s U.S. Senate race Thursday. Democratic U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin said she’ll oppose President Donald Trump’s pick to the court, igniting a storm of criticism from her Republican rivals. Baldwin’s opposition was expected, as she raised concerns about the court overturning abortion rights and the Affordable Care Act. But the timing was swift, coming just days after Trump nominated Kavanaugh for the seat to be vacated by retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy.” (Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, 07/12/18)
Senator Baldwin met with Obama’s Supreme Court nominee Garland. “After meeting with federal Appeals Court Judge Merrick Garland on Thursday, Sen. Tammy Baldwin called the GOP’s refusal to take up his Supreme Court nomination ‘outrageous’ and said ‘the impact of this obstruction will be long felt.’ … Some Republican senators have agreed to meet with Garland anyway as a kind of courtesy. Among Republicans holding closed-door meetings with Garland this week were Charles Grassley of Iowa and Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania on Tuesday, Kelly Ayotte of New Hampshire on Wednesday, and Rob Portman of Ohio on Thursday. All are up for re-election in 2016. All reiterated their opposition to hearings or a vote — including Grassley, chairman of the Senate judiciary committee.” (Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, 04/13/16)
Judge Kavanaugh comes knocking but Tammy Baldwin and Senate Democrats won’t meet with him. “Many Senate Democrats have refused to hold the traditional meet and greet events with Supreme Court nominee Judge Kavanaugh …” (The Washington Examiner, 07/24/18)
Some Senate Democrats met with Judge Kavanaugh but Tammy Baldwin refused to meet with him in August. “More Senate Democrats will meet with Supreme Court nominee Brett M. Kavanaugh this month as the White House is warning that time is running short for Democratic leaders to schedule sit-downs with the judge before his confirmation hearings next month.” (The Washington Post, 08/14/18)
Leah Vukmir is a nurse, military mom and the Republican nominee for U.S. Senate who is running to bring the Wisconsin Way to Washington. She currently serves as a state senator from Brookfield.
